  • JESUS AND THE MINISTRY OF DELIVERANCE
  • Luke 4 v 17 – 19  (KJV)

v.17 “And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

v.18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.”

v.19 “To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”

(NKJV)

v.17 “And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:”

v.18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me

To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;”

v.19 “To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

(NLT)

v.17 “The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:”

v.18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,

that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free,

v.19 “and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”

(NIRV)

v.17 “And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. Jesus unrolled it and found the right place. There it is written,”

v.18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me. He has anointed me to announce the good news to poor people. He has sent me to announce freedom for prisoners.

He has sent me so that the blind will see again. He wants me to set free those who are treated badly.”

v.19 “And he has sent me to announce the year when he will set his people free.”

  • From these four versions, we can clearly outline the contents of the Ministry of our Lord Jesus and why the spirit of the Lord is upon him.
  1. Jesus is anointed to preach the gospel (good news) to the poor.
  • To heal the broken hearted.
  • To preach deliverance to the captives (KJV)
  • To proclaim liberty to the captives (NKJV)
  • To proclaim that captives will be released (NLT)
  • To announce freedom for prisoners (NIRV)
  • Recovering of sight to the blind
  • To set at liberty them that are bruised (KJV)
  • To set at liberty those who are oppressed (NKJV)
  • That the oppressed will be set free (NLT)
  • He wants me to free those who are beaten down (NIRV)
  • To preach the acceptable year of the Lord (KJV)
  • To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord (NKJV)
  • And that the time of the Lord’s favour has come (NLT)
  • To announce the year when he will set his people free (NIRV)
  • From the above scriptural explanations, we can now see that the Ministry of our Lord Jesus is all about total deliverance, total freedom, total liberation, total rescue, total emancipation of mankind.  Halleluyah!

v.14 “that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting”
