SCRIPTURE REFERENCE: 1 Sam. 24 v 6, 8, 11
V.6 – And he said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord.”
- 8 – David also arose afterward, went out of the cave, and called out to Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed down.
V.11 – Moreover, my father, see! Yes, see the corner of your robe in my hand! For in that I cut off the corner of your robe, and did not kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor rebellion in my hand, and I have not sinned against you. Yet you hunt my life to take it.
Despite Saul’s attitude to David:
- He constantly reminded himself that he was dealing with the anointed king.
- David’s respect for Saul’s office was maintained until the very end.
- What you say about your Boss will happen to you:
2 Sam. 1 v 19 & 24 –
- 19 – “The beauty of Israel is slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!
- 24 – “O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with luxury; Who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.
David spoke well of Saul despite his short coming.
- Do not strike at the Lord’s Anointed.
2 Cor. 5 v 16 – “Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer”.
- Learn to keep a spiritual perspective of the person you are dealing with; It will keep you on safe ground.
- One of the secrets of success is to honour both your NATURAL and SPIRITUAL fathers until the very end.
- God knows that many fathers do not live up to standard, however He expects a certain honour to flow from children to the fathers. Eph 6 v 2 & 3 – “Honour your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth”
- I have resolved to honour my father in the Lord, no matter the situation or circumstances.
- Decide not to attack your father in this life (whether biological or spiritual). Do not destroy your future. No matter how evil a father may seem to be, leave him to God.
- Listen to good advice. Bad advice will ruin you. 1 Sam. 25, 32 & 33
- Allow God to work things out – (1 Sam 26 v 9) Leave everything to God and keep your hands clean. When you get involved and try to help God, you may end up creating an Ishmael who would rise up to challenge your Isaac.
Failure to admit faults is a manifestation of Pride and Stubbornness. Compare Saul (1 Sam 15, 19 – 23) and David (2 Sam. 12 v 9 – 13)
